This is a simple Cat in the Hat craft to help students practice place value.

Practice place value with this easy and fun Cat in the Hat laminated place value mat.  Students take turns calling out a 3-digit number.  Using a dry erase marker, students write the number on the hat brim and then place that many number tiles in the appropriate columns.  This is a quick and simple way to whole-group assess. When students have filled in their mat, they raise their hand.  You can see at a glance who needs help.

Review place value in an interesting way by having students find the place value of Columbus' special date: 1492.  Includes a 1492 place value matplace value manipulatives for 1's, 10's, 100's, & 1,000's place value cubes and rods.  Make this even more fun by playing a game.  Students choose a partner and take turns spinning the place value spinner.  The object of the game is to be the first to collect all of the place value cubes and rods that make up the year 1492.  As another math extension, have children figure out the current year and then subtract 1492 from it to find out how many years ago Columbus sailed the blue.
