Getting to the Core

1-2-3 Come Count and Flip Stripes With Me!

This Seuss flip hat is a bit more complicated than the money “cent-stional” one that I designed earlier, but it is still a pretty easy project that nails a lot of Standards in a fun way. Common Core State Standards: K.CC.4a, K.CC.4b, K.CC.4c, K.OA.1,K.OA.5, K.CC.6, 1.MD.3 dr seuss activities, dr. seuss lessons, free common core state math standards for kindergarten, free common core state math standards for first, telling time activities, dice activities, seuss games, fine motor skill activities, skip counting by 2's lessons, patterning lessons, cat in the hat lessons, cat in the hat activities, cat in the hat crafts, 10 apples up on top activities, 10 apples up on top lessons, whole group assessing CCSS, odd and even activities, math centers for March, bulletin boards for march, seuss bulleting boards, cat in the hat bulletin boards, math bulletin boards,

How To Make A Hat:Run off the templates. I’ve made a teacher answer key with the time-consuming parts done, to expedite making a sample to show your students.  Because of the cutting. gluing, and assembling, this is a terrific fine motor skill activity.

You can have students either color every other stripe on the front cover flip portion of the hat, in an ABAB pattern, or you can run off the cover template on red construction paper.

Cut the stripes so that one child gets the odd numbers to glue to his white cover, and another child gets the even numbers.

By gluing the stripe to the matching number, you are reinforcing sequencing, one-to-one correspondence, as well as odd or even numbers, plus skip counting by 2’s for the even numbers.

Before assembling, have students fill in the inside of the hat.  If you have them use a yellow and green highlighter, you can revisit the science fact that apples come in red, yellow and green.  You can also have them color their apples in an ABC color pattern when they get to that portion of the hat.

There is plenty of room to have your students write the numbers in as well.  I did this AFTER the tally marks, so that the first column of numbers stays separate from the writing of the numbers, so that the first number does not look like an 11, the next a 22 and so on.

Children draw hands on the clock to the hour.   Remind them that the hour hand is shorter than the minute hand.

I purposely used part of the fact family of 5.  Counting the dots on the dice and adding them together to = their number, will reinforce yet another Standard.

Students trim their front and back covers, and cut out their hat.  I found that it was easier, to fold the edge of the front and back covers and then glue them to the front and back parts of the hat, before cutting the stripes.

This way everything wasn’t flapping all over the place, with the risk of getting torn or completely ripped off.  This will also help prevent children from cutting their strips entirely off, if they don’t stop at the dashed line.

My Y5’s often did that because they were simply on a roll and kept cutting.  Once students complete their hats, there are all sorts of things you can do with them.

Call out a number and have students flip to it.

Have them flip all of their even or odd numbers over. As they flip the even numbers, have them count by 2’s. Call out a number and have them flip over all of the numbers that are greater or less than that number.

Call out a time and have them flip to that. Do quick story problems by saying: “Flip to 2:00 o’clock. If 3 hours go by, flip to what time it will be.”  Call out 2 numbers, have them flip them and then add or subtract them.

Students can choose a partner and take turns rolling first one dice ‘til they have flipped numbers 1-6 and then add the 2nd dice to roll and flip numbers 7-10.  The first one to flip over all of their flaps, or the one who has the most flipped stripes, by the time the timer rings, is the winner.

If you happen to think of more ways to use this number hat, I’d enjoy hearing from you. diane@teachwithme.com, or post a comment here if you like.   dr seuss activities, dr. seuss lessons, free common core state math standards for kindergarten, free common core state math standards for first, telling time activities, dice activities, seuss games, fine motor skill activities, skip counting by 2's lessons, patterning lessons, cat in the hat lessons, cat in the hat activities, cat in the hat crafts, 10 apples up on top activities, 10 apples up on top lessons, whole group assessing CCSS, odd and even activities, math centers for March, bulletin boards for march, seuss bulleting boards, cat in the hat bulletin boards, math bulletin boards,Click on the link to view/download the I've Got Your Number Dr. Seuss Hat.

As most of you know, I like to cover a variety of standards in all of my subject areas whenever I do a unit.  Dental hygiene is no exception, so I wanted to create a fun writing prompt.

dental hygiene activities, dental hygiene lessons, dental hygiene crafts, dental hygiene writing prompts, dental hygiene alphabet cards, alphabet activities, alphabet games, We had scissor practice daily, as my Y5's really needed to work on their cutting skills, and it was also a way for them to strengthen their finger muscles.

Writing words and simple sentences on the cut out, also helped, and covered lots of standards at the same time.

I've included a triangle, with a rhyming poem, that they can cut and then glue to the back.  I found it in a dozen places Online and no one seems to know who wrote it.

Clarissa, from Pennsylvania, teaches kindergarten, and said she's been enjoying the dental hygiene activites and wondered if I had any centers that had to do with color words, with a dental hygiene theme.

Run off the master toothbrush on white construction paper; laminate and trim.

Using dry erase markers, students trace and write the color words in matching colors and then place the appropriate colored handle over the top.

I have a template for the handles.  If you want to make more than one set, run it off on a variety of colors of construction paper; laminate and trim.

If you only want to do one or two sets for a center, simply print one copy of the master and then make a template that you can trace and cut.  Click on the link to view/download the Toothbrush Color Matching Game packet.

For this activity, run off the handles on popular colors of construction paper and give students a choice.  (I have a handle for boys and one for girls, so that they can practice pronouns.)

Run the "bristle boxes" off on white construction paper.  Students cut on the lines to make "bristle tabs" that they can flip. On the other bristle box they write how they take care of their teeth.

I also included a traceable bristle box for PK children (pictured). Click on the link to view/download the Snip and Flip Toothbrush Writing Prompt Craftivity.

1-2-3 Come Do A Few More Coin Activities With Me!

Karissa, from California, says she has collected them all, and wondered if I could make some with coins on them for her kinders.

I've included 10 frames for pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters, plus extra tiles of each, so you can run off and use them as manipulatives.  Using real pennies would also be fun for your kiddos.  Click on the link to view/download the 10 Frames Coin Packet.

Simply run off the coin bookmarks.  Students pick a partner and take turns rolling the dice.  If they roll a one they color in the penny.  If they roll a two, they color in the second coin, which is a nickel and so on.   However, if someone rolls a six, they lose their turn.

The first child who colors in all of the coins on ther bookmark is the winner.  This game also provides a teachable moment to review ordinal numbers as well.   Click on the link to view/download the Coins On A Roll dice game.

My Y5's enjoyed making the "Money Matters Mobiles."  They looked wonderful swirling and twirling from our hallway ceiling.

They're also an easy way to review sizes (small-medium and large) as well as the circle shape, and provide great cutting practice too.

I opted to add the paper dollar to the top and cut out my students' school picture, so they could glue it over Washington's face.

My report card standards only required my Y5's to know the penny, nickel, dime and quarter, but I've also included templates for the half dollar and dollar coins as well.  Click on the link to view/download the Money Matters Coin Dangler craftivity.

Finally, Connie, from Oregon, really liked the Olympics flip for facts file folder activity, that was included in the Olympic writing packet and asked if I had one for coins.  I thought this was a wonderful idea, so I got right to it.

Making the Coin Autograph Booklet is a fun way to do that.  Run off copies for all of your students, or simply make one for yourself and share your teacher’s copy with them.

I did a bit of research to see if I could find the the President’s signatures, and found them extremely interesting. Washington and Jefferson wrote with feather quills, so set up a center activity where your students can write their name with a feather-dipped in paint.

I did this for a Constitution Day activity and have a template for that you can use.  Click on the link to view/download the quill page from Activities For Constitution Day.

To get some name writing practice in, include an extra page with the booklet and have students collect some autographs of their friends, or to expedite things, have each student sign one paper, and  run off copies for everyone, entitled Your Classmate’s Autographs.
