We're Going Places! A Seuss-Inspired Writing Prompt Craft For "Oh The Places You'll Go!" PART 2

Last week I posted a super-fun “Oh the Places I'll Go”  flip-the-flap, writing prompt HAT craftivity.

This way, teachers could choose which writing prompt best suits their students and grade level.

Featured below, are the other two "Oh the Places" packets, which are not only perfect for March is Reading Month, Read Across America, or a Celebration of Seuss Week. but certainly appropriate at the end of the year, when students are "going places" by advancing into a new grade or graduating!

As with the HAT craft, these too, combine reading and writing with a bit of geography.

Children think of a place they’d like to travel to. Money is no object, so the world is literally at their feet.

Older students can do a bit of research, to find out about a fascinating place they’d like to travel to. (Thus the geography connection, as well as great research & technology practice!)

They come with and without faces.

The Students choose one, which becomes the “base”. They color, then cut it out. The hat "booklet" is glued to the top of the graphic of the child's head.

For one of my samples I used the same color scheme as the "Oh, the Places You'll Go" story.

This is a great teachable moment to practice an ABAB color pattern as well.

Using white as my second color choice and not having to fill in those stripes also saved time.

The craftivity provides an interesting way to practice & reinforce the “5 Ws + 1 H” question words in a fun way.

In all three packets I’ve included a poster with the questions, which you can use to introduce your lesson.

Afterwards, hang it up, so that older students can refer to it, or you could also read each question, then allow time for students to write down their answers.

If you think this is too much coloring for your kiddos, simply snip off the bottom suitcase to give to another child.

A luggage tag for a student’s name, adds some 3D pizzazz. 

Completed projects make a terrific bulletin board or hallway display.

Students color and trim the suitcase, then glue it to the front of a file folder, which flips down to reveal their completed 3-page writing prompt.

I’ve also included a blank page template, so that students can consolidate their answers to one page, or write longer answers if they want.

There are 4 options children can choose from.

Students color and trim, then glue to the top of their trunk booklet.

This option can be left "as is" or can also be topped with one of the 4 ”students reading a book” graphics for a taller completed project.

Dr. Seuss Writing Prompts

1-2-3 Come Do Some Seuss-Themed Writing Prompts With Me

Louis L'amour said: "Start writing no matter what. The water does not flow until the faucet is turned on."  However, if "It's time to do some writing..." is greeted with a cacophony of classroom groans, it's definitely time to fuel your students' imaginations, peak their interest, and tweak what they write, so that they'll WANT to.

Many Dr. Seuss books, lend themselves to interesting and fun writing prompts.  (For a complete list of his books, scroll down to yesterday's article.) Today's blog features some of my most popular, Seuss-themed, writing prompts. Hopefully, writing time, will be met with the more harmonious and intellectual sounds of engaged and busy minds happily working away.

Encourage and challenge older students to make a rhyming sentence, using plenty of tongue-twisting alliteration like Dr. Seuss. 

For example, Zz is for a Zigglewag who likes to play wiggle tag.  He eats zinnias, zingles and zag, all of which make me personally gag.  or Bb is for Boomtoot, who's from Bangladoot and likes to eat fruit, especially bapples, belon and bloot. 

The packet includes a page for students and one for the teacher, a sample, plus 26 Seuss-font letter tiles.

This is a take off of Dr. Seuss's book On Beyond Zebra, which is about all of the letters that come after  Z. In the beginning of the story, Cornelius is bragging that he knows all of the letters from A to Z.

A letter he never had dreamed of before..."  like the letter Snee, which is for "...sneedle, a terrible kind of ferocious mos-keedle.  Whose hum-dinger stinger is as sharp as a needle. "

All of these goofy letters have a name and symbol.   I thought it would be fun to make a class book of all of the pretend letters that might possibly come before the letter A.

The packet includes a class book with two writing prompts to choose from, as well as a 3D cylinder "craftivity."

Students color and cut out their circus tent and then attach their completed writing prompt paper to either side, so that they can bend it into a cylinder shape.

For that finishing touch, children add a toothpick flag, and then choose either a clown or a ringmaster to color and glue their photo on top of that face, so that it looks as if they are peeking out of the tent flap.

They write the place, followed by what they want to see or do there.

On the small bucket, students think of all of the things they'd like to do. 

This can be for the month, year, in 5,10,20 years, or a list of all that they want to accomplish in their lifetime.  Completed projects make terrific bulletin boards.

Run the basket template off on brown construction paper. For that finishing touch, students glue their photograph inside.

This is one of those "awwww-dorble" keepsake activities that mommies are especially fond of.

The packet includes a class book writing prompt, as well as a more advanced writing prompt for older students.  There's also a list of 19 quotes about fear.  Share a few in discussion, or have students choose their favorite and comment on it, including why they like it and if they agree with it. 

The book, The Little Old Lady Who Wasn't Afraid of Anything, by Linda Williams, is a wonderful comparison story, and offers more opportunities for writing and discussion.  I've included a Venn diagram to help students compare and contrast these two stories.

Writing Prompts

1-2-3 Come Make A Keepsake With Me!

I’m Surviving In School is a quick, easy and fun way to get students to practice their writing skills.
Graphic organizers are extremely beneficial for visual learners and help students organize their thoughts and think succinctly.  These mini-writing prompts are more do-able and less intimidating. Doing a page at the end of each month, is a terrific Daily 5 activity, or independent writing center. Alphabetize the booklets and number them, so students can quickly and easily find theirs to work on. These are a great addition to a portfolio or file, to share with parents, during conferences, as they should show marked improvements along the way.  Completed books make an outstanding keepsake.

writing activities, writing centers, monthly writing prompts, writing promps for fall, daily 5 activities, keepsake booklets, portfolio activities, Encourage students to use proper capitalization, punctuation, spaces, adjectives etc. and you have covered a lot of Common Core State Standards as well.  There’s a generic cover as well as covers for preschool through 6th grade.  Define what an adjective is and why using describing words are important.  Pass out markers and have students write adjectives that describe themselves, in each bubble box on their cover.  Explain that they can add more words as the year progresses.  To make this extra special, have students glue their school picture inside the bus.  You may want to make a booklet yourself, to use as an example to help explain things each month.  Students really enjoy learning about their teacher.

The pages are geared from easy to more difficult as students advance.  Later, explain to them that instead of just a list, you want them to write sentences.  You can also have them start with the header, so that they are working on a complete sentence with proper capitalization, instead of just answering the topic.  i.e. Favorite food:  My favorite food is pizza. Later, have them expand their thoughts even more, by explaining why and adding adjectives: i.e. My favorite junk food is pizza, because I like spicy pepperoni.

writing activities, writing centers, monthly writing prompts, writing promps for fall, daily 5 activities, keepsake booklets, portfolio activities, To get in more fine motor practice and add some pizzazz to the pages, have students use colored markers, pencils and crayons.  In the Me... section, students practice writing their name and drawing a self-portrait.  This is especially important for preschool and kindergarten students.  In the beginning, younger kiddo’s can draw a picture of how they feel, with a happy or sad (etc.) face.  They will be limited to 1-word answers in the boxes.  You can also opt to have students do these 1-on-1 with a helper, who writes down their answers, or send a page home as homework to be returned in a week.

Lion and Lamb Activities

Will March Go Out Like A Lion Or A Lamb?

The end of March is drawing near and I have some SHEEP and LION activities to help you end the month in a fun way.

Run off the sheep template on white construction paper and have students jazz them up with wiggle eyes and 2 cotton balls.

If you have students pull apart the cotton balls into a nice fluffy pile, the sheep fleece will look more realistic, be a great fine motor skill and avoid the problem of having students simply glue whole cotton balls to their work.

I never have enough time to cover nursery rhymes as a separate unit, so I plug them in with whatever theme I’m doing, whenever they fit, as an added genre during story time.

If you'd like to include a "craftivity" with writing, have students make a lion or lamb paper holder and display their work on a bulletin board, before you collate their work into a book.

Besides this writing prompt, there is also one that's a great activity after you read the above Mary Had A Little Lamb Nursery Rhyme.  Ask students what animal they'd like to bring to school if they could bring any animal.  Encourage them to think outside the box and not just think of the usual "show & tell" pet like a puppy or cat.  Students complete the sentence with their animal and illustrate the page.

Kite Booklets

Celebrating March Is Reading Month With Kites

Need some reading and writing activities for those block periods or Daily 5?

The Wind Blew is an easy reader with 4 on a page to conserve on paper when you print.

This also helps reinforce sequencing when students cut the pages apart and put their booklets together.

The end of the story allows students to think of their own “thing” that the wind blows, write it down and illustrate their page accordingly.

When everyone is done with their booklets have students share this page with the class and write down how many things they thought of that the wind blew.

Pat Hutchins has a cute book When The Wind Blew that would make a nice transition activity. {amazonWS:itemId=068971744X}

The last page allows you to nail another core standard by asking students if they like when the wind blows.  A graphing extension is provided for that.  Discussion can follow of why a student does or doesn’t.

Make this a special keepsake by having students glue their school photo to the boy or girl face on the last page.

To reinforce reading and writing skills, students trace the shape words as well.
