1-2-3 Come Make Open House Extra Special With Me

Each year for my Open House, as well as parent-teacher conferences, I put up a small table, covered it with a seasonal tablecloth and set a basket of mints on it, along with a sign that said: "Families Are Worth A Mint! Help yourself."

open house ideas, parent teacher conferences, ideas for parent teacher conferences, ideas for open house, back to school ideas, families are worth a mint, worth a mint sayings, worth a mint posterWhile doing research on the web, I came across a variety of similar ideas, including this adorable poem that was all over Pinterest in various forms.

There was no link to who the original writer was, so I decided to jazz this sweet sentiment up, with a bit of clip art and my original saying.

Add a bit more color by mounting the poster on construction paper, then laminate and file away in a folder to use each year.  This is a really inexpensive way to express your appreciation, as The Dollar Store sells bags of mints year round and you can pick up all sorts of little baskets at garage sales.

open house ideas, parent teacher conferences, ideas for parent teacher conferences, ideas for open house, back to school ideas, families are worth a mint, worth a mint sayings, worth a mint posterFor that finishing touch, and to draw attention to your basket, I've included some large mint patterns, so you can reproduce my entire display pictured in the photo.

Run the candy circles off on card stock and then tape them to long wooden skewers.  I tacked on a red bow using glue dots and then stuck my "peppermint balloons" into the basket.

One of the nice things about using peppermint, is that it's definitely NOT a favorite of children, however, it is something that adults enjoy.  (No worries about a few kids eating the entire basket.)

If you'd prefer a smaller "bite size" mint, Sam's Club and Cost-co sell the mini butter-mints (pink, yellow, white and green) in bulk.  They have a long shelf life, so I always had plenty on hand.

The hands in the photo are neon orange.  The feet are much larger, but I took the shot with Elliot upside down, so they look smaller, they are actually much bigger than the hands.  Because this artwork is so big, when I took the photo feet fist, the head looked shrunken. Oh my!

Anyway, you get the idea.  I know yours will turn out really cute and be a great keepsake that your students will enjoy making.

The end of the year shorts say: My short shorts of what I want to do this summer, The one for the beginning of the school year says: My short shorts of what I did this summer.

Here’s how to make a “Creative Writing Craftivity Kid”:

Run off copies of the t-shirt and shorts on a variety of brightly colored construction paper. Students will fill in the writing prompts and cut the clothing shapes out.  Buy a few pair of wacky sunglasses at The Dollar Store in bright colors.  Have your students put a pair on and take a head shot of them.

Print the photo off in black and white and enlarge them on the copier. Students color the sunglasses in with a magic marker to compliment the color of their T-shirt or shorts.  Students trace their hand and foot on a folded sheet of bright or neon-colored construction paper.  By cutting on a folded piece of paper they will get a pair of hands and feet.

Children glue their hands to the cuffs of the T-shirt and their feet to the bottom of the shorts. These paper kids make an adorable wall display.  Run them under the ceiling, as a border in your hallway.

Helpful "How Do I Get Home?" Name Tags

back to school ideas, ideas for the first day of school, student name tags, graphing, graphing how students get to school, graphing how students go home, classroom management tips, One of the things that can sometimes be a stress-filled moment for me is the time when I’m getting my children ready to go home.

When you are dealing with little ones who are also anxious and a bit nervous and worried about that too, it is very important that they see you cheerful, calm and in control.

If you have things organized this will run smoothly.

Children are exhausted by now, it’s hot and everyone’s  beyond spent at this point in the day.

I always try and enlist a few adults to help me so that things run smoothly. Having them hold up a sign works wonders.

Their name tags all have a matching picture of a group of children on them.  Their tags also have that room number on it.

On the back of the card is their address and phone number.  This has saved me a lot of time when a bus driver has told me: “They're not on my bus.  Where do they live?”
or “I don’t think he rides today.  You better call his parents.” Or for whatever else I need to know an address or phone number quickly.  I don’t have to go back to my room or search for a file, I simply flip over their name tag and all the info is there.

My name tags are also YELLOW which is a different color from the other kindergarten teachers (everyone has their own color) so everyone knows that these are Y5 students.  I include Teacher: and write my name after that heading. It helps staff if one of my students wanders out of line.

I laminate my name tags and ask parents to safety pin them to their child for the entire month.

I also make an extra set to keep at school incase they lose them or forget to wear them.

back to school ideas, ideas for the first day of school, classroom management tips, graphing, graphing how children get home, graphing how children get to school, name tags for students, I tell parents to simply take them off as soon as they get home and pin them to their backpack, that way they are always handy and if they forget to pin it on in the morning, I’ll still have it.

I walk the bus children to their buses.  The other adults take the rest of the students to our designated “pick up room” where all the kindergarten children are “deposited” for safety reasons.

Parents who are picking up their children can go here and sign them out.  Older children who are walking with these young ones can find them there, and the teacher in charge of the after school care program can get the K’s here as well, or send an assistant if she is busy.

Having a designated “pick-up room” has kept children safe and eliminated little ones running all over the hallways unattended.

Our librarian watches the room until the teachers get done boarding children on buses, then we stay with our students ‘til everyone is picked up.

It's All In A Name...

Part of the excitement of the first day of school for teachers, as well as the children, is meeting all of the new students!  I try to make learning everyone’s name fun.  So I do several activities that involve names.  There are several report card standards that the Y5’s have that revolve around their name: being able to recognize it as well as write it, so they’re not only learning each other’s names, they are practicing standards. Woo-hoo for a first day win-win!

  • To help my little ones recognize & write their name, I have name cards on the tables for them to copy.
  • I also have a “table top” skill sheet each day involving “finding” their name on something.

  • I just designed this new balloon heart.
  • Simply fill in your students’ names to make one.

ideas for back to school, ideas for the first day of school, ideas for learning namesGather ‘Round:

Have students sit in a circle.

Decide on a fun “movement pattern” like clap twice, pat knees twice.

For older students you can add snap fingers twice too.

Say the following after the movement:
_______________(child's name) ______________ (child's name)
How do you do?
Who's that sitting next to you?
Child says name of person sitting beside them.

Count  to 3 slowly and if they don’t know then that child says their name.

  • Apples are a big theme for us in September, so I just designed “You’re a smartie!” WELCOME apples.
  • Run off my master on red construction paper.
  • Make a template for the leaves and stems.

  • Run the worms off on green construction paper.
  • Cut everything out.
  • Glue a Popsicle stick to the back of the worm.

  • Write your students’ names with a black marker.
  • Using an Exacto-knife, cut a slit in the top of the apple.
  • Tape a pack of Smartie candies around the stick worm.

  • Insert the worm in the slit in such a way so that the candy slides over the top of the apple, while the stick goes behind.
  •
  • Sprinkle them on the floor around the room and have them find them.
  •
  • To make it harder for older students,  make puzzles out of the apples.

  • After you finish making them, cut them in zig zag diagonals so that part of their name is missing.  They will have a top-left, and a bottom-right apple piece.
  • As with any candy treat that I give my students, I preface it with: “This is for you to take home.”
  •
  • To ease the disappointment a bit, I’ll have one Smartie candy as a reward for everyone when they find their apple.

This is also a fun and easy “busy activity” while you’re doing those crazy little “have-to-get-done’s”, or assessing to see where children are at.

  • Children write the letters of their name in the boxes and color the vowels their favorite color and the rest their second favorite color.
  • A pattern emerges.
  • When they are done they pick a partner.

1-2-3 Come Build A Student's Self-Esteem With Me

Because I'm currently on vacation, I wanted to post an "oldie but goodie" very popular download, that was extremely successful with my students. This packet was designed before I had all of the cool fonts, clip art licenses and design programs that I currently use, but it's still a wonderful idea that I hope you can use.

smiling children, back to school ideas, back to school activities, building students' self esteem, smile files, classroom management tips, ideas for the first week of school, activities for the first week of school, When I taught high school, I remember running into a mother of a student years later.  She shared with me that her son still carried a dog-eared scrap of paper around in his wallet, with a list of positive qualities his classmates had wrote about him in my class!  Wow.  I never forgot that conversation, and the impact something so simple can have on a person.

I think it's extremely important to build a young child's self-esteem, and therefore their confidence.  Various studies have shown that children who are willing to take risks learn to read faster!

A child needs to feel confident to venture a guess, and make a mistake in order to learn.  A fun way you can do this, is to make a Smile File for them.
back to school ideas, back to school activities, building students' self esteem, smile files, classroom management tips, ideas for the first week of school, activities for the first week of school,

Here's How: Write your students' names on manila file folders.
  • Run off my letter + the note to parents, explaining the file and requesting a family photo. Send them home the first week of school.
  •
  • Buy a pack of various sizes of smilie face stickers for the Award calendars.
  • Run off the "I love my family!" hearts on a variety of colored construction paper.
  •

  • back to school ideas, back to school activities, building students' self esteem, smile files, classroom management tips, ideas for the first week of school, activities for the first week of school, Whatever system you use for choosing children, pick a child each day to have your class fill out a "This is your day!" sheet, so you can get these completed the first month of school.
  • Whenever you pass out certificates or other paper awards, have students put them in their Smile File.
  • Periodically choose work that children will put in their Smile File, so you have things to show parents for Parent Teacher conferences.
  • If a member of their family comes to help in the class or chaperone, take a photo of them with mom, dad, grama, grampa working with them.  They can glue the photo to a sheet of construction paper, write about it and put it in their Smile File.
  • It's important to give students a choice of things they want to put in the Smile File.  Perhaps they got an "I love you" note from mommy in their lunch box, or a 100% on a spelling test, or were Star Student; you can make copies of things so they can take originals home.
  •  back to school ideas, back to school activities, building students' self esteem, smile files, classroom management tips, ideas for the first week of school, activities for the first week of school, At the end of each day, pass out a smilie sticker to anyone who has put a smile on the teacher's face ALL day.  In other words, this student has made wise choices (not moved their apple or other behavior management token, or been in the Time Out chair etc.), has completed their work or whatever else you have explained to your students as the guidelines for receiving a sticker.
  •  Children put their smilie face sticker on the appropriate day of the week.
  • This Smile File then, can work as a great behavior modification program as well.  You can reward students who have gotten a smile for the entire week/month if you want to.
  • I've designed monthly certificates for this purpose, which of course they can collect and put in their Smile File

  • back to school ideas, back to school activities, building students' self esteem, smile files, classroom management tips, ideas for the first week of school, activities for the first week of school, Have students paperclip certificates so they can stay organized from other things.
  • If you'd like a writing extension for the calendar, post a list of one-word "happies" that students can choose from, to write on their calendar of what made them smile the most that day.
  • I've given you a list of suggestions that you can keep posted.
  • You should make one for yourself too!  I keep my favorite drawings, cards, "scribbles of love!"  and little notes from parents and students in mine.
  • Then, when you're having one of those "I feel so unappreciated!"  days... you can sneak a peak at your Smile File and feel "paper hugged" The file will help you remember why you became a teacher in the 1st place and hopefully give you a burst of feel-good energy.

Fun and Fair Ways To Pick A Partner

tips on how to pick a partner, fun ways to pick partners, classroom management tips, back to school ideas, ideas for back to schoolWhen it comes to children choosing a partner they sometimes find it hard to make a decision, because they are bombarded with “Pick me, pick me!” as many friends start asking to be their partner.

Other children feel left out because no one wants to be their partner, still others continue to choose the same child to work with ALL of the time.

I try to mix things up and make things fun and fair, with no hurt feelings, by having students pick a partner in a variety of enjoyable, sometimes themed-ways, that often carry an educational purpose with them as well.

Here are some of my favorite tips:

  • Find someone wearing the same color as you are.
  • Your partner is sitting on your left/right.
  • Count off by 2’s, 3’s, or 5’s etc.  Remember your number. Look at the numbers on the board and see who your number match is.  (5 is matched with 10, 15 with 20 etc.)
  • I buy stick-on bows at Christmas when they go on sale and make sure that I have at least 12 different kinds with matches.  I put them in two different seasonal bags and then have children choose a bow, stick it on and go find their partner.

  • Reinforce colors, shapes, numbers, telling time and have fun spinning by making my Partner Time Clock.

ideas for picking a partner, classroom management tips, back to school ideasA Deck Of Cards:
  • Sort cards in a deck of playing cards so that matches come out perfect and then have students choose a card and find their “mate”.
  • i.e. the 2 of diamonds is partner with the 2 of spades or however you want to make it.
Bulletin Board Border:
  • I also use seasonal bulletin board border like apples or pumpkins and cut the pieces apart putting upper or lowercase letters on each one.
  • Make sure you have only enough apples for the amount of children you have present that day.
  • Put them in two different baskets/bags, (one for uppercase and one for lowercase) and then have ½ the students choose an uppercase apple and ½ choose a lowercase one.  Give them a minute to go find their partner.
  • You can do the same with different colored shapes.
  • Cut apart compound words. Write the answers on the board to assist students in finding their partner.

  • Use my seasonal  Partner Monthly Puzzles.  Like the apple pictured here for September or in February run off a copy of my heart on 12 different colors of construction paper, laminate the paper and then cut the hearts apart.

  • Put them in two different “valentine” envelopes and have the children choose who will be their Valentine for the day.  Click on the link to check them out.
