Review place value in an interesting way by having students find the place value of Columbus' special date: 1492.  Includes a 1492 place value matplace value manipulatives for 1's, 10's, 100's, & 1,000's place value cubes and rods.  Make this even more fun by playing a game.  Students choose a partner and take turns spinning the place value spinner.  The object of the game is to be the first to collect all of the place value cubes and rods that make up the year 1492.  As another math extension, have children figure out the current year and then subtract 1492 from it to find out how many years ago Columbus sailed the blue.
