1-2-3 Come Do Some More Math Core With Me

Yesterday, I published a huge 70-page Common Core Thanksgiving Math packet.  It met with rave reviews and became one of my top downloads this month.  If you want to read that article, simply scroll down to yesterday's blog post. 

As with most of my ideas, I have a zillion going on at the same time.  When a packet starts to get pretty big, I try to sort through items that can be used as a separate file, such as a particular craftivity, game or assessment. 

Such was the case with today's posting.  Initially, these activities were going to be part of the Common Core Thanksgiving Math packet, but didn't quite fit that worksheet and game format, so I pulled them to make the following separate activities that I hope you'll enjoy.

Mayflower Mayhem is a quick, easy and fun counting game.  The mayhem comes in, because in order to win the game, you need to use critical thinking skills and a bit of strategy, as there are several "routes" your Mayflower can take.  Some of them include shortcuts, so there's that to consider as well. 

Children pick a partner and take turns rolling the dice.  A roll of 1, 2, 3, or 4 moves your ship forward, where as a roll of 5, has you going backwards one space. A roll of 6, puts your sails in "irons" and your turn is skipped.

There's more fun to be had, if you land on the same square as your opponent; one of the perils of going in the same direction as your partner chose.

Fact Family Feather Fun, is a cute turkey craftivity that your students will enjoy making, while they practice fact families, writing them on the turkey's feathers. 

I added a "real" feather to the top of the turkey's head for that finishing touch. 

Turkey Talk, is a quick, easy and fun way, to whole-group assess: listening and following directions, numbers, number words, ordinal numbers and colors.

Because the teacher reads the directions, you can omit various steps for younger students, who may be at different levels.

Finally, I had a request for some Thanksgiving sliders.  Cindy, from Virginia, has used a few of my other seasonal ones, with her young kinders, and wanted to know if I had any with a Pilgrim or turkey.  (Didn't - - but do now.)

Sliders, are also a quick, easy and fun way to whole group assess a variety of standards. 

I call them "sliders" because children slide the paper strip up or down, to locate an answer in the "window" of their manipulative.

I've included a boy and girl Pilgrim, a boy and girl Native American, as well as a turkey slider pattern in the packet. 

I made black line ones so your kiddos can color them, but also included ones in color, so teachers can easily make samples to share. 

There are slider strips for upper & lowercase letters, counting to 30, counting backwards from 10 to 0 and 20 to 0; skip counting by 2's, 3's, 5's and 10's, plus one for shapes.

The packet also includes a 10 frames spinner game.  These completed projects, make a nice bookmark.

1-2-3 Come Do A Few More Coin Activities With Me!

I had quite a few requests for some specific coin-related lessons, so I made time to get these designed, as I think many others will find them helpful as well.

The ever-popular 10 frames packet collection, has really grown!  I think I've covered all of the monthly themes, but am happy to make others. 

Karissa, from California, says she has collected them all, and wondered if I could make some with coins on them for her kinders.  

I've included 10 frames for pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters, plus extra tiles of each, so you can run off and use them as manipulatives.  Using real pennies would also be fun for your kiddos.  Click on the link to view/download the 10 Frames Coin Packet.

Connie, in Delaware, teaches preschool and wondered if I had any coin games?  I liked to use dice to help my Y5's  subitize, (Quickly identify how many in a group, without having to count.) so I designed the Coins On A Roll dice game. 

Simply run off the coin bookmarks.  Students pick a partner and take turns rolling the dice.  If they roll a one they color in the penny.  If they roll a two, they color in the second coin, which is a nickel and so on.   However, if someone rolls a six, they lose their turn. 

The first child who colors in all of the coins on ther bookmark is the winner.  This game also provides a teachable moment to review ordinal numbers as well.   Click on the link to view/download the Coins On A Roll dice game.

Quite a few teachers asked if I could make some worksheets involving coins.  Many of them were required to send homework home and several needed something for early finishers to do.

I also had several homeschooling moms and teachers who were looking for some crafts with a coin theme, so I  re-designed the coin dangler. 

My Y5's enjoyed making the "Money Matters Mobiles."  They looked wonderful swirling and twirling from our hallway ceiling. 

They're also an easy way to review sizes (small-medium and large) as well as the circle shape, and provide great cutting practice too. 

I opted to add the paper dollar to the top and cut out my students' school picture, so they could glue it over Washington's face. 

My report card standards only required my Y5's to know the penny, nickel, dime and quarter, but I've also included templates for the half dollar and dollar coins as well.  Click on the link to view/download the Money Matters Coin Dangler craftivity.

Finally, Connie, from Oregon, really liked the Olympics flip for facts file folder activity, that was included in the Olympic writing packet and asked if I had one for coins.  I thought this was a wonderful idea, so I got right to it. 

File folder facts are a simple and effective way to introduce research to early elementary students.  Children search for interesting facts Online, choose their favorites, and then put them into their own words. 

As with the Olympic file folder, I've also included several pages of how to explain citations to your kiddos and provide links too.

1-2-3 Come Work With 10 Frames With Me!

My Ten Frame templates, 10 frame booklets and activities have been top downloads since I designed them, so I wanted to make a set of 10 frame cards that you could easily cut into puzzles, for a fun way to review a variety of Common Core lessons.

You can also use the bottom set of cards for assessments or a math center.  Simply print, laminate and have students fill them in with a dry erase marker. 

Run off copies and do a number a day.  Students keep their work and when all 20 number "worksheets" have been done, they collate them and have a nice review booklet to take home and share with their families.

The completed top cards can be used as flashcards, an anchor chart-border, and quite a few games. 

There's a 2-page tip list of what else you can do with the 10-frame cards, and I've also included a page of greater and less than cards, as well as "kaboom" bomb cards to play even more math games.

1 2 3 Count February Stuff With Me!

You asked for it, you got it!

The 123 Count With Me easy reader math booklets continue to be downloaded 100's of times a day!

Visitors have requested Valentines and Presidents, but I also whipped together one for Dental Hygiene Month, which was a big theme for my Y5's.

The packets range from 27-37 pages and help with Common Core State Standards: K.CC.4a, K.CC.4b,K.CC.4c, K.CC.3, K.CC.5, K.CC.7, RF.K.1a, RF.K.1c, RF.K3c, L.K.2b, L.1l2b, Rf.1.1a

You can practice a variety of skills and standards with these cute booklets. 

They are a fun way for your students to learn or review, write, recognize and read numbers and number words.

These latest additions also have the end punctuation left off, so that students can add it, and you can cover yet another CCSS!

1. Students read, trace and write the number and number word.
2. They see a number of themed items in a sentence and say it.
3. They spy the number in a sequence and circle it.
4. They X-out that many boxes or use a bingo dot marker or stamp in the 10 frame. ( I encourage my students to make a color pattern.)
5. They cut and glue the set/group to the matching numbered box.

• It only takes one time for students to need assistance and then they can work independently on their books. 
  
• Do one a week or month, depending on your themes or needs of your students.
